One of my biggest skincare concerns were the dark spots on my face. So, my goal was to find options to help me lighten up those areas. That’s how I found out about the benefits of vitamin C serums. The one that I use helps to brighten my skin and fade the dark spots. I also feel that it helps me to reduce some of my fine lines and wrinkles. I also discovered that it is an antioxidant for my face and it helps to boost collagen production, which helps my skin to stay firm and elastic, i.e. less sagging. Lots of wins from a single product.
However, when I started trying out vitamin C serums, I noticed a severe burning around my eyes (like eyes watering and crying tears at the same time). I thought it was the product, so I kept sending it back and trying out something else new. But, when I was lamenting this to a friend of mine, she pointed out that vitamin C is acidic. So, if I am putting it too close to my eyes, which is where the skin is very thin, it will burn. Instead, she suggested using a buffer zone around my eyes and to not apply it anywhere near my eyelids.
So, now, after I cleanse my face, but before I moisturize, I put eye cream around my eyes and let it dry for a bit (maybe brush my teeth while I give it a minute to work its way into my skin). Then, I apply vitamin c serum on my face and neck – steering clear of my eyes. Voila! No burning! Then, I can continue with my lactic acid and moisturizer with sunscreen as I normally do for my morning skincare routine.
If you’re still experiencing burning, you may actually need to try another product – maybe one with a lower concentration (5-10%) before working your way up. Try a patch test before you slather it on. You can also take a break from the serum and incorporate it more gradually. If all else fails and you really want to try a serum, also check in with your dermatologist to find out what might work better for your skin.
