When my son was about to start fourth grade, several of my mom friends and I all found ourselves grappling with the same question: How do we talk to our boys about puberty without making it awkward? We chose You-ology: A Puberty Guide for Every Body by Trish Hutchison MD FAAP, Kathryn Lowe MD FAAP, and Melisa Holmes MD FACOG, and it turned out to be the perfect guide for these important conversations.

Over a few months, my son and I read the book together, chapter by chapter. It helped us open up conversations that I never thought would be this easy. I wanted him to get the right information from me, not from the rumors and gossip at school—and You-ology was the perfect tool to help me do that.

The book starts by tackling the “big feelings” my son was already experiencing, even before puberty. It eased us into talking about what’s coming, like changes to his body, friendships, and hygiene. One of my favorite parts? It even addresses internet safety and gender identity in a way that felt thoughtful and inclusive. Each chapter offers discussion prompts, so we were able to talk through real-life scenarios together.

But here’s the thing—it didn’t cover everything. I know the day will come when I need to talk to him about intercourse, but we aren’t quite ready for that conversation yet. This book let me ease into what we are ready for, at our own pace.

Were there moments when I got embarrassed? Definitely. Did my son ask questions that made me laugh (on the inside)? Absolutely. But we got through it, and the experience was invaluable. I even plan to read it with my daughter in a few years.
