When my daughter’s Girl Scout troop wanted to learn about different holidays, I knew a Hanukkah party would be the perfect way to share our traditions. With a mix of fun activities, delicious snacks, and meaningful lessons, this party brought the Festival of Lights to life for 18 Girl Scouts and their families. Goodie Bags: A Festive Take-Home Treat
Each girl received a goodie bag filled with:
- A dreidel (with instructions on how to play)
- A bag of chocolate gelt
- Glow sticks (symbolizing the holiday’s focus on light) These were inexpensive yet meaningful, combining fun and tradition.

Food Prep: A Spread to Remember
We prepared a mix of festive snacks and traditional foods:
- Traditional Hanukkah Dishes:
- Potato Latkes: We made over 50 latkes, serving them with applesauce and sour cream. They were a hit and disappeared almost instantly!
- Sufganiyot: Raspberry-filled donuts served as a nod to the classic Hanukkah dessert.
- Festive Snacks:
- White chocolate-covered pretzel rods with blue and white sprinkles
- Rice Krispie treats
- Cookies
- Yogurt pretzels
- Rock candy, M&Ms, Hershey Kisses, and marshmallows
- Popcorn trail mix and ring pops

My daughter led the troop in learning about the history of Hanukkah. She explained:

- She taught the girls what each Hebrew letter on the dreidel means:
- Nun (nothing)
- Gimmel (take all)
- Hay (take half)
- Shin (put in one)
Then, she led everyone in a lively dreidel game using gelt as prizes. Watching the girls (and some parents!) spin dreidels and laugh together was a highlight of the evening.
Storytime: Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins
To wrap up the lesson, my daughter read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel and Trina Schart Hyman. The story captivated the group and tied together the themes of Hanukkah in an engaging and age-appropriate way.
