Kings Canyon National Park Itinerary: One Epic Day of Adventure with Kids
If you’re looking for a perfect day packed with adventure, stunning landscapes, and family-friendly fun, this Kings Canyon National Park itinerary is for you! From towering sequoias to cascading waterfalls and fascinating caverns, we covered it all in one unforgettable day. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit and a video to guide you through the planning and highlights.
Morning: Big Stump Trail & General Grant Tree Trail
Big Stump Trail
We started our day bright and early at the Big Stump Trail, a 1.5-mile loop that’s rated easy. This trail is a fantastic introduction to Kings Canyon National Park, offering rich history and fun exploration opportunities. Our kids had an absolute blast climbing the massive stumps left behind from logging in the late 1800s. If your family loves climbing or exploring, this is the trail for you. The loop took us about 45 minutes and left us energized for the day ahead.
General Grant Tree Trail
Our next stop was the General Grant Tree Trail, located in Grant Grove Village. This quick 0.75-mile paved loop features the majestic General Grant Tree, one of the largest trees in the world. While the tree is awe-inspiring, the real highlight for us was the Fallen Monarch Tree, which you can walk through from end to end. It was a hit with the kids, who loved climbing and running around inside. The trail took us about 15 minutes and is perfect for families with young children or anyone looking for an easy, accessible hike.
Midday: Scenic Byway & Roaring River Falls
Kings Canyon Scenic Byway
Next, we embarked on the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, a breathtaking drive with plenty of pullouts for scenic views. If you have extra time, Junction View is a fantastic spot to stop and take in the dramatic canyon landscape. The drive itself is part of the adventure, so plan for a few spontaneous stops to soak in the beauty of the park.
Roaring River Falls
Just a few miles down the byway, we arrived at Roaring River Falls, an easy 0.3-mile out-and-back trail. This short paved path leads to a stunning waterfall, but the real fun is in the rock scrambles near the river. Our kids couldn’t get enough of climbing the boulders and exploring the area. This spot is also a geologist’s dream, with visible rock layers that make for an educational (and fun) experience. If you visit, don’t forget bug spray and be prepared for some sand in your shoes. It’s a great place to enjoy a picnic, so bring lunch and stay a while.
Afternoon: Woods Creek Trail & Boyden Cavern
Woods Creek Trail
We made our way to the Woods Creek Trail at Road’s End, though we didn’t venture far due to wildfire smoke. Despite the haze, the towering trees and peaceful surroundings were lovely. If you’re up for it, bring a swimsuit—this area offers opportunities to dip into the creek. Just watch out for sand; we ended up with quite a bit in our shoes!
Boyden Cavern
The highlight of our afternoon was the Boyden Cavern tour, located along the Scenic Byway. This short but fascinating tour takes you deep into a limestone cave filled with unique formations, including glowing calcite. The highlight for us was when the guide turned off the lights and illuminated the walls with black lights, showcasing the calcite’s bioluminescence. If you can, bring a small black light flashlight for an even better experience. Note that this tour is not suitable for those with mobility challenges, as there are some tight spaces and areas where you’ll need to duck.
Evening: Dinner & Reflections at John Muir Lodge
After a day full of adventure, we headed to John Muir Lodge for dinner. The on-site restaurant offered a cozy and convenient option to wind down. As we reflected on the day, everyone shared a few of their favorite moments:
- The kids loved climbing rocks at Roaring River Falls and all over the stumps throughout the park.
- My husband couldn’t get enough of the stunning views along the Scenic Byway and of all of the trees.
- I was fascinated by the glowing calcite in Boyden Cavern.
Tips for Your Kings Canyon National Park Itinerary
- Download Maps in Advance: You won’t have much reception. So, downloading detailed park maps via Google maps is great to do ahead of time to be able to use GPS.
- Pack Smart: Bring a hiking backpack with essentials like water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, a first aid kit, a flashlight, and sweatshirts for the cooler temperatures inside the cave.
- Stay Flexible: While our itinerary was well-planned, we kept room for spontaneous stops and adjusted based on how much time we had at each location.
- Plan Around Key Times: The Boyden Cavern tour required a reservation, and sunset was at 6:29 PM, so we made sure to schedule around those anchor points.
- Check the Weather: Wildfire smoke affected visibility on some trails, so check the conditions before your visit.
